In-State or Out-of-State Residency
The Northwest Institute of Literary Arts charges the same rate of tuition to in-state, out-of-state or out-of-country students.
Textbooks and Other Expenses
Books, computers, online connections, travel to the campus for residencies and other necessary expenses are the student's responsibility and may vary with the student's home location.
Cancellation and Refund Policies
- When a class is canceled through no fault of the student and the class credit could not be completed, the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts will make a full refund of tuition to the student.
- English 500: The Profession of Writing (residency-only class)
Because English 500, The Profession of Writing, is taught only at residencies, requires a minimum of five residencies and 160 classroom hours to complete, and may be dropped only if the student withdraws from the MFA Program, the standard tuition refund policy does not apply. The refund policy for English 500 is as follows:
- One month or more before the residency begins 100%
- Less than one month before the residency begins (registration fee) 90%
- Withdrawal from program during or following first residency: 70%
- (30 hours of instruction completed) Withdrawal from program during or following second residency: 50%
- (60 hours of instruction completed) Withdrawal from program during or following third residency: 30%
- (90 hours of instruction completed) Later withdrawal: 0%
Refunds are made within one month of receipt of notice of withdrawal. Exceptions to this cancellation and refund policy may be requested through petition to the program director of the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing.
- All other classes:
If a student is unable to complete a class or classes once begun, refunds will be given according to the following schedule. A student may inform the Registrar in person, by telephone, by e-mail, or postal mail of withdrawal from a course. The withdrawal takes effect on the date of the postmark, e-mail, conversation, or telephone call. A written withdrawal must include a drop/add form, and a verbal withdrawal must be followed up with a drop/add form. The drop/add form is available on the program’s web site. Beginning one month prior to each residency, 10% of the tuition becomes a non-refundable registration fee. Refunds will be given within 30 days of the date of withdrawal.
The refund schedule for all classes except English 500 is as follows:
- One month or more before the residency begins 100%
- Less than one month before the residency begins (non-refundable registration fee) 90%
- Day 1-5 of residency 80%
- Day 6-10 of residency 70%
- First online week (third week overall) 60%
- Second online week (fourth week overall) 50%
- Third online week (fifth week overall) 40%
- Fourth online week (sixth week overall) 30%
- Fifth online week (seventh week overall) 20%
- Sixth online week (eighth week overall) 10%
- Seventh online week (ninth week overall) 0%
Refunds are made within one month of notice of withdrawal.
Exceptions to this cancellation and refund policy may be requested through petition to the program director of the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing.
Federal regulations may require separate refund schedules for students receiving Federal educational funding. See Financial Aid pages on web site for details.
